Bath and North East Somerset Council has recommended that plans to create a Sainsbury's superstore in Westfield should be turned down.

The application will be heard by the council's planning committee on Wednesday (March 13) when councillors sitting on the panel are tasked with making the ultimate decision on whether the development should go ahead.

The planning application seeks to transform the current CFH factory at St Peter's Park, off Wells Road in Westfield into a 54,000sqft superstore.

The new shop would have about three times more shopping space than the firm's existing Midsomer Norton store and would also boast a petrol station and café.

CFH, which employs around 200 people from the local area, say they need to sell their existing factory to enable them to move into new custom built premises.

Concerns have been raised about the impact the store will have. The Midsomer Norton and Radstock Chamber of Commerce are worried about the level of non-food goods being proposed and instead are backing the plans to create a new supermarket closer to Midsomer Norton town centre, at the South Road car park currently being marketed to buyers by owner Bath and North East Somerset Council.

Westfiled Parish Council, Radstock Town Council and Midsomer Norton Town Council all voted against the plans.

Sainsbury's says that 150 jobs would be created and that surveys have shown a need for another supermarket.

The Development Control Committee meeting will take place at The Guildhall in Bath at 2pm on Wednesday, March 13.
