Posters demanding the “secrets” of any farmers involved in the badger cull have been condemned as intimidatory by the National Farmers Union.

The Department for Food Environment and Rural Affairs has warned that objectors to the cull should use legitimate methods to get their message across. “Any organised campaign of intimidation is unacceptable,” a spokesman said.

Posters have appeared in the Taunton area, in the style of the Ghostbusters film, with the tag line Cullbusters and asking the public to call or text a telephone number linked to Stop The Cull, the coalition of animal welfare organisations.

They call on the public to ring or text the line if they see anything strange. Callers are asked to leave the farmer’s name, the farm name and the “gory details”.

Stop The Cull has denied printing the posters but has said it is keen to use information to help it in its attempts to sabotage surveys of badger numbers. It said it had no intention of publishing details of farmers’ lives.

A message on the Stop The Cull website said: “Looks like someone has been putting up posters in Taunton over the weekend. On Saturday morning we received our first tip-off.

"This intel was immediately passed on to one of our field teams and from that a number of new hair DNA traps have been located.

"These hair traps are put out by the Food and Environment Research Agency who are trying to work out the population of badgers, the problem for FERA is that other people know what they are doing and are removing the badger hairs. This invalidates the entire study, or at the very least will vastly reduce the number of badgers believed to be in the zone.”

The studies are carried out by collecting the hairs left by badgers on wires specially laid above badger pathways. DNA testing shows whether the hairs are from different individuals.

A Defra spokesman said: “Badger populations are estimated using data from published literature, scientific sources, applicants assessments of number of setts, and surveying and monitoring of sites. All work is on schedule.”

Ian Johnson, South West NFU spokesman, said the posters are “intimidatory” and added: “It is a totally disingenuous attempt to disrupt a perfectly legitimate, strictly controlled cull.”

“Apart from the obviously now very urgent imperative to end the slaughter of thousands of reactor cattle that's causing endless misery for farming families; those of us who care about children, way above their own self-promotion, know that there has to be a badger cull or eventually we'll just have more and more of this.

    EMAIL SENT/RECEIVED April 2nd. 2006

    County Times. Powys, Mid Wales.

    "Dear Mary,

This is winding up into something very nasty. We were told about the problem last autumn, but the newspapers / media had very little on it. Local vets and farmers knew and fed us bits. This (below) was published 30th. March, and our source has now had another conversation with SVS vets and private vets in the area.

In the late 1990's just a couple of farms were under bTb restriction, but that has now surged to become 30/40. Dead badgers have been found in the area, including one on school playing fields.

This carcass was taken to test for 'poison'. but HSE stepped in and stopped the postmortem - inadequate Group 3 pathogen facilities (?). . It was riddled.

SVS sent letters to Welsh Assembly / Page St. and they were lost stolen or strayed. The whole episode was buried. Page St. wanted absolutely no positive Tb badgers.

In the last 3/4 years eight or nine children, not including this little one, have had treatment for enlarged neck glands. This involved either a 6 month course of antibiotics, or operations to remove. Classic m.bovis lesions I'm told (by a vet) but referred euphemistically by doctors as "Atypical tuberculosis from a non human source". They are telling these kids, that they picked it up from the ground.

The badgers use the school playing fields as latrines, and a newish housing estate borders the same farmland too.

We're ignoring those canaries again. (reactor cows)"

Don't you care if you dog or your children contract M.bovis?"”

“The NFU are closing down the countryside to kill Badgers.

This will effect dog walkers, ramblers and anyone enjoying the great out doors, but we don't seem to matter so we must be 'plebs' as far as the NFU are concerned!”

“There are actually two n's in Benn, not one; just as there are 4,000+ genes in the genome of all the bacteria in the TB causing M.tuberculosis genus, 75% of which are now believed to have constantly evolved, simply for the evasion of any hosts immune response. . That is the very reason they are still killing 2million humans annually, and many millions of other mammals right across the planet after at least 10,000 years. . They now have a new ally in their armoury as they march insidiously against mankind. . It's called HIV.

“It won't make a blind bit of difference.

Culling badgers was never about plebiscite; it's about who ultimately has to take responsibility for this catastrophe that's been caused by badgerism when the xxxx finally hits the fan.

I'm looking forward to the day when we finally get people like Hilary Ben and Tony Blair in court for pusillanimously going against the advice of their Chief Scientist Sir David King.”

“You have to weigh up the political and PR impact of another council (and a very large council at that) voting against the cull. Each council that says "NO" increases the likelihood that other councils - looking at the same evidence - will reach the same decision.

I'd guess these councils are Tory or LD led - which makes their distaste for the cull policy even more worrying for the government. If even your supporters don't approve the policy you haven't a hope of persuading those who are neutral or in disagreement with you on other matters.”

They may well be calling an extraordinary meeting but there is little they can do about this cull if it is not on council land and as we already know they own very little land within the cull area.”

“Charlespk : You are the one with low intelligence if you are so blinkered that you cant see that this disastrous cull of mostly healthy badgers will not cure Bovine TB in cattle but probably make it worse.
Remember that landowners and farmers are in a minority and we (the consumer) can make life difficult for them if they continue decimating the wildlife of this country by their evil actions.”
