B3168 crash near Ilminster injures six and leaves woman critically ill
A woman was critically ill in hospital last night following a two-car crash in Somerset in which six people including a six-month-old baby were injured and four helicopters flew to their aid.
Five fire crews were called in to free two of the victims, working under floodlights following the late-night collision. The helicopters included Devon & Cornwall and Avon and Somerset Constabularies’ two aircraft, and a Search and Rescue copter from RAF Chivenor in Devon.
The vehicles collided at 10.40pm on Saturday on the B3168 at Bay Hill, Dillington, near Ilminster. The road was closed for more than seven hours.
A Vauxhall Astra, driven by a woman, was in head-on collision with a Vauxhall Corsa also driven by a woman, and carrying a man, two 15-year-old boys and a six-month-old baby.

Firefighters from Ilminster, Chard,Taunton and Yeovil worked to free the two women, removing the vehicles’ roofs to extricate them. Ambulance staff stabilised them before they were airlifted to hospital.
The woman driver of the Corsa was flown to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, with multiple life-threatening injuries. Her condition yesterday was critical.
The other woman was taken to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, with a serious head injury and was in stable condition yesterday.
The male passenger was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, with non life-threatening chest injuries.
Two 15-year-old boys were taken to Frenchay and Yeovil District hospitals. Their condition is not reported to be life threatening.
The baby was released after receiving medical treatment.
