Winscombe 2

Odd Down Reserves 4

Winscombe have been knocked out of the Somerset County League Premier/Division One Cup, with manager Gregg Dover admitting that it was his side's worst performance of the season.

Winscombe were beaten by Division One side Odd Down Reserves, but it was a game that the hosts would have been expected to win.

The opening exchanges were fairly even but once the visitors had taken the lead, it should have been the expected wake-up call from the home side and, for a short period, that was the case.

Winscombe did force an equaliser leading up to the interval after an interchange of passes between Evan Day and Ben Hooper had set Neil Andow on a run down the flank. Andow's cross into the box saw Kevin Pearce complete the move in style as he poked the ball home from close range.

Winscombe were slow in coming out of the blocks at the start of the second half and a Lawrence Jenkins mistake allowed Andrew Keen to screw a shot under the keeper's body. Odd Down took a 3-1 lead midway through the second half when a Danny Williamson thunderbolt crashed against the crossbar and Keen headed home from the rebound.

Winscombe were now facing an uphill task as they were left chasing a two-goal deficit, but they were failing to fire in all departments.

However, the home side did give themselves a late glimmer of hope with a goal on 89 minutes. A corner into the penalty area saw Pearce at the back post score from close range.

Whatever thoughts Winscombe had of taking the game into extra time were quickly dismissed as Odd Down broke away almost from the restart to score a fourth and give the Division One side a passage into the next round.

Dover said after the match: "That was absolutely awful and we got what we deserved.

"On a bad day, three or four players may have poor games, but today we had all 11 – no one player could be excused.

"I am devastated and so are the players. We have to quickly put this game behind us and perform a whole lot better at Cheddar on Saturday. If we don't, we really do have a problem."
