Peter Wicks, from Wells Auction Rooms, persuaded the gathering to buy the donated lots and raise the impressive sum.

Team Romania's secretary, Keith Rudyard, said: "The town hall staff, caters, John Robson and his friend Richard providing music, Acacia Flowers, Peter Wicks, our sponsors Wells Tyre Services the donors of lots, the Wells Journal and, of course, all those attending made it an evening to remember.

"Unfortunately, several people were unable to attend but should they wish to make a donation of money or tinned food they can send it to me at 86 Southover, Wells, BA5 1UH."

Several times a year Team Romania take donated essentials to an orphanage, old people's homes and poor folk to the country's Brasov County.

John Milner, the team leader, said: "My reasons to keep going to Romania are many, I guess I just can't stop going.

"When you meet people and find that their biggest problem is ‘what do we eat today?’ then it makes a mockery of the things we all worry about here in the West."

There next fundraising event will be a quiz at the Sherston Inn, Wells, in April.

Details will be in the Journal when they are confirmed.
