ASSISTANT manager Adam Fricker wants Chard Town to eradicate sluggish starts after three second half goals sunk Roman Glass St George to keep them second in the Toolstation Western League First Division.

Sam Clark won a penalty for the Robins midway through the first half and took it himself to give the visitors the lead, before the hosts replied with a headed equaliser five minutes from the break. St George had a player sent off early in the first half and Chard began to make the extra man count as Clark scored twice to complete a hat trick. Liam Cleal netted Chard's fourth in the dying moments to confirm the victory.

Chard assistant manager Adam Fricker praised his side's second half display but admitted they need to improve the way they start matches.

He said: "It is a difficult place to go and they (Roman Glass St George) are a very strong side physically and they are good going forward, but in the second half we played some of the best football we have played this season.

"Going away from home our main aim is avoiding defeat but at half time with the way the game was going we wanted nothing less than three points. We are the top goal scorers in the league and with the players we have available we should be scoring goals. We just need to tighten up a bit. We have got a habit of starting slowly at the moment which we need to cut out.

"It was good to bounce back from last week's defeat (away to Shepton Mallet). Almost every time we have lost we have won the next game so it shows that we have good character. If we can just get some consistency now we will be in a very good position."

CHARD Town under-18s host Forest Green Rovers in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday evening having progressed further than ever before.

Ryan Mason gave the Robins an early lead against Yate Town last week before Bradley Miles doubled the advantage five minutes before the break. Chard followed up Miles' spilled free-kick for 3-0, ending the game as a contest soon after and then running amok in the last ten minutes to complete a 7-0 rout.
