Workers at an Argos distribution centre in Somerset have gone on strike in a row over pensions.

The stoppage at the site in Bridgwater started on Wednesday and so far the Unite union says around 190 workers have taken part.

Parent company Home Retail Group said it was closing its final salary pension scheme and replacing it with a “competitive” alternative.

A spokeswoman said: “We have brought in a number of third-party contractors to keep operations moving and ensure our customers remain unaffected.”

“This goes back to the first Blair gov. when Brown taxed pension funds & other savers, even below the tax threshold, dragging £5-10b a year from them. He was warned of the bad effect this would have on pensions but being 'prudent' ignored it. Naturally no succeeding gov. will wish to forgo this large sum.”
