A leading animal rescue campaigner has been shocked by the killing of one of her pet sheep by a savage dog.

The attack on a flock of old petting sheep, happened in broad daylight and also left seven sheep injured.

The dog was spotted by a passer-by roaming around the paddock just off Quarry Road in Winscombe in the early afternoon of January 8.

But it wasn’t until early evening when pet lover Lyn Vennall took her own rescue dogs out for their walk, that she saw the full horror of what had happened.

One ewe, who had her throat torn, died later from her injuries, two were so badly mauled they may have to be destroyed and a further six had deep puncture wounds from the dog.

They had been chased into the hedgerows and into a nearby stream during the attack.

However, the most shocking thing for Lynn, who has now had to have all the flock treated with penicillin, was that the animals are now terrified of her own pets.

“The sheep are my pets, not livestock,” said Lynn.

“And because I take in all kinds of dogs, they have all learned to get along.

“But this attack has left the sheep terrified.

“I used to walk my dogs out to check on the sheep, but now those sheep are too scared to come to be fed, that saddens me the most.”

Lynn, has in the past helped dogs who have faced being destroyed because they have attacked livestock said: “I don’t think any animal should be put down, but this dog needs to be properly restrained, or moved somewhere it is not able to roam around livestock.”

Police say the incident occurred between 2-4pm on January 8.

They have asked anyone who might have witnessed the attack, or might be able to help them identify the dog which was on the loose in that area, to telephone 101.
