Alternative site for fireworks
THIS year's Burnham Carnival seafront fireworks display will be set off from a barge in Bridgwater Bay after organisers discovered a high tide will prevent them being lit from the beach.
The annual display is always scheduled for the Sunday of carnival weekend, but an expected 10m high tide on the night of November 7 means the fireworks cannot be launched from the jetty as usual.
Organisers Burnham and Highbridge Town Council has decided to pay an extra £2,500 to £3,000 to hold the display on a barge.
The initial problem came to light in late June, when the council also looked at moving the event to Apex Park or the BASC Ground but neither have enough parking.
Town clerk Eileen Shaw said: "The council's Fireworks Working Party has made the decision to hold the display on a barge in the sea to get around the problem.
"This was suggested by the fireworks supplier – it's the safest option available and should mean the display will be more spectacular than ever, with the fireworks reflected on the sea.
"Another advantage is, if there is a strong wind the fireworks will not be blown onto the shore, reducing the risk of the event being cancelled at the last minute due to safety."
She added the plan comes at the extra cost and urged local businesses or people to donate to cover the sum.
Mrs Shaw said: "Donations are welcome, the event attracts thousands out and to the town and does benefit the area."
The display will start at 7pm.
