Alcohol ban to stop anti-social teenagers in Congresbury parks
An alcohol ban is to be introduced at two parks in Congresbury – to stop them being used as a late night drinking haunts.
North Somerset Council planning and regulatory committee approved an application for a new by-law which will stop alcohol from being consumed on the King George IV playing fields and the Millennium Green.
Congresbury Parish Council and the police applied to North Somerset Council for the introduction of a bylaw after complaints youngsters were drinking on the playing fields until the early hours, causing a disturbance to local residents.
The teenagers have also been seen drinking in the nearby Millennium Green and youth shelter, both of which sit next to the banks of the River Yeo.

Bins in the area and the recycling banks in the car park have been set alight several times.
There have been a number of vandal attacks on signs along the river- bank and play equipment in the area.
Residents have complained about young drivers meeting in the riverside car park and playing music from their stereos late at night.
It is understood the teenagers who meet at the car park are old enough to legally drink and as there was no bylaw in place, police did not not have powers to confiscate the alcohol.
The ban will come into force on January 1.
Congresbury councillor Pete Sewell said: “There have been problems with anti social behaviour and drinking in these two locations in the past. This new order will help alieviate the problems.”
Alcohol bans already exist in other areas of the district – including the Lake Grounds and Portishead and large parts of Clevedon.
Anyone found drinking in areas covered by the bylaw will have their alcohol seized and could be fined up to £500.
