Achieving men's health – 'difficult job, easily done'
Men are indestructible. They are strong and always ready to rise to a challenge. They are brave, able to look danger in the face without flinching, and rarely bother the GP. These are just a few of the myths that surround men and their health. The truth is far different. According to the National Men's Health Forum, men are 60 per cent more likely to develop cancer and are 70 per cent more likely to die from the disease. 66 per cent of men are overweight or obese. Just 40 per cent are physically active enough to benefit their health and 20 per cent visit their GP less often than women. It is known that circulatory diseases kills more men than any other disease and the rate amongst men is over 50 percent higher than for women.
There are two key areas that have an effect on men's health, the male mindset, which can be altered, and the simple fact that men are more easily affected by major health problems.
UKSH Consultant Urologist, Ade Adeniyi said: "The male mindset sees health as a female issue and men have a relatively low degree of awareness of their health needs. Reluctant to seek help, they often presume they will 'just get better' and don't want to 'annoy' their local GP. However, it's important that men speak up and address their health needs early. In many cases should there be any issues; early diagnosis can lead to successful treatment and management of any conditions".
But its not just making sure you see your GP, making a conscious effort to maintain a healthier lifestyle can give you a much lesser 'chance' of falling prey to diseases such as cancer and other conditions. Over the coming weeks, we will be looking at common health concerns for men, from embarrassing issues such as testicular checks, urology issues and erectile dysfunction, to general fitness.
