Selwood Academy, in Frome, has been given a good rating by Ofsted, and become one of the first schools in the country to receive an inspection under the new framework.

The school, which gained its academy status in December last year, gained a good judgment in all aspects, including overall effectiveness, achievement, the quality of teaching, leadership and management and behaviour and safety.

Head teacher Stephen Kirby said: "We had our inspection just days after returning from the Christmas break, one of the first schools under the new framework, which began at the start of the year, to do so.

"The result represents a better 'good' than the previous Ofsted inspection, as the bar has undoubtedly been raised.

"Ofsted noted the exceptionally high percentage of parental replies to the Ofsted questionnaire and their overwhelmingly positive response to the new 15 questions.

"The lead inspector, Jonathan Palk, acknowledged that there is evidence of improved and indeed outstanding practice since the last inspection in 2009 and endorsed our evaluation of the school."

Chairwoman of governors Claire Cardnell praised the work of pupils, staff and parents in achieving the rating.

She said: "I am very proud of the staff, pupils, parents and the local community who have worked together so effectively.

"In the verbal feedback to the school, the lead inspector said he had never seen such inspirational teaching."

The report stated: "Without exception, all the lessons observed had a real buzz of learning about them."

The Ofsted inspectors also gave guidance to the school on areas that needed to be improved, including accelerating more able pupils' progress, ensuring there are clear learning objectives in all lessons and raising the aspirations of the high attaining children.
