A stretch of the A39 over Exmoor closed due to snow and high winds has been reopened.

The road between Porlock Hill and County Gate was closed for 24 hours after a number of motorists became stranded due to the wind and resulting drifts of fine snow.

Somerset County Council's highways department shut the road at the request of Avon and Somerset Police.

Road workers used snow ploughs and blowers to clear the road, and it is now open to traffic again.

With sub-zero temperatures expected to stay until the weekend, the council says it will continue to monitor conditions on the high stretch of road in the coming days.
