The campaign has put the issue firmly on the agenda, bringing it to the attention of influential players in Somerset and Dorset communities and key national decision makers.
Last month, the Western Gazette reported that South Somerset District Council had passed a motion to back our campaign and actively pursue lobbying Government to fund dualling the road.
Editor Emma Slee said: “We know the A303 is an everyday nightmare for those who not only live in our area but who visit or use the road for work or business.
“It is shameful that past Governments have repeatedly neglected vital investment on what is the South West’s second major route.
“It is time to end the madness. Dualling will save lives and boost the economy.
“It is clear we cannot let the chaos continue.”
Our coverage over the weeks has included the views of business leaders who believe that dualling the road would be worth billions to Somerset.
It is estimated that upgrading the route could create more than 20,000 jobs and be worth between £11 billion and £13 billion to the economy by unlocking a 3.2 per cent uplift in the South West’s economic output.
Western Gazette reporters have heard first-hand accounts of the carnage on the A303 from crash victims, emergency service personnel and a road safety expert.
They have also heard from representatives of the business community who want to see the road dualled to boost the South West economy.
Somerset County Council is leading talks between the Government and representatives from the South West which plan to formally submit a case for dual the A303.
The Western Gazette is calling for the A303 to be upgraded to a dual carriageway through Somerset and Dorset – from the Southfields roundabout near Ilminster to the Mere bypass.
We are urging the Government to approve this scheme as part of a wider project to improve the entire A303 and A358 – boosting the economy by reducing congestion.
We believe dualling sections of single carriageway and adding a central reservation will improve safety by preventing head-on collisions.
But in promoting this campaign we also hope to raise greater awareness of the dangers of travelling on this road and hope to encourage motorists to drive more safely and take responsibility for themselves and others.
