4pm: Police grateful for continued M5 closure patience
POLICE are grateful to motorists who continue to suffer the inconvenience of a continuing, severe closure of the M5 today.
A lorry overturned on the southbound carriageway between junction 19 Portishead and 20 Clevedon before 7am. Its load spilled over and across the northbound carriageway, forcing a full closure.
The current situation: Two lanes are closed and traffic continues to queue over four miles on the M5 southbound between J19 A369 (Portishead) and J20 B3133 (Clevedon).
Northbound: Two lanes remain closed with queueing traffic over one mile long and long delays due to recovery work and fuel spillage on M5 Northbound between J20 B3133 (Clevedon) and J19 A369 (Portishead).
A statement from Avon & Somerset Constabulary said: "Closing a motorway is never a decision we take lightly and we fully recognise the impact this has on motorists as well as the communities affected by diversions.
"However, on this occasion we had no other option and we are grateful for the understanding and patience shown by drivers and their passengers today."
Motorists travelling from Bristol and using the A370 are advised of possible delays due to the on-going road works at junction 21.
