£23k grant to help children calculate crop circle maths
A £23,900 Lottery grant looks set to help Frome children learn more about the mystery and maths of crop circles in a series of workshops.
The grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund's (HLF) Young Roots scheme will enable young people from Frome and Devizes to take part in the Measuring the Land project, which is the finale to the Break 3 initiative, a year of creative maths in Frome.

"We looked at the landscape of where we are, on the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire, and saw crop circles, and the prehistoric barrows and monuments that pre-date them in the landscape.
"We were overjoyed when HLF were bold enough to support us."
Crop circles have been a seasonal feature of the Wessex landscape for nearly 50 years, with 95 per cent of the world's crop circles reputed to appear within a 20-mile radius of Cley Hill, near Longleat.
The project will involve young people exploring the story of how and why these spectacular phenomena occur and how they relate to the older landscape.
The project has been devised by the Rook Lane Arts Trust with Young People Frome and Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes, and will also make links with the Break 3 schools programme of outdoors maths opportunities, creative practitioners in town and village schools, and Frome Festival exhibitions and special events.
The young people will use their mathematical skills in design workshops, and will have the chance to produce an exhibition before helping to archive the material they have produced during the project.
Design workshops will take place on June 16 and 17, from 10am until 1pm, at Rook Lane Chapel.
Entry is free and artwork from the workshops will be shown alongside the Break 3 Summing Up! Exhibition at Rook Lane Chapel during the Frome Festival in July.
