Aspiring artists are being given the chance to design medals that will be handed to hundreds of runners at the Yeovil Half Marathon.

Race organisers Total Buzz Events have invited members of the public to submit their ideas before they choose a favourite.

Race director Jody Foy said: “The Yeovil Half Marathon is in its third year now and I’ve designed the medal each year so I thought this time it would be nice to get the community involved.

“It has to be a two-dimensional design but apart from that it can be anything – it could be circular or it can be a cut-out shape.

“We’re open to any entries, it could be an entry from a youngster or from a budding designer.”

Runners will receive a medal each and a goody bag when they cross the finish line on Sunday, March 24.

Previous designs include footprints and a cut out number one for the winning runner.

The half marathon has been growing in popularity since it was first held in 2011, attracting 800 runners.

Last year’s event drew 1,000 people to the streets of Yeovil and Mr Foy hopes this figure will increase to around 1,500 this year.

As well as giving people the chance to test their fitness, organisers hope the event will raise thousands for good causes.

Proceeds from the runners’ entry fees will go towards the Flying Colours appeal for a new Special Care Baby Unit at Yeovil Women’s Hospital.

Runners are also given a sponsorship form and encouraged to fundraise for the appeal or a charity of their choice.

Mr Foy said: “For me and Steve, the Flying Colours appeal is close to our hearts.

“We were both born in Yeovil Hospital and it’s a very worthy local cause that is very proactive about fundraising.

“In previous years we’ve raised money for charities such as the air ambulance.

“It’s always good to give something back to the local community.”

This year’s race will start and finish at the Yeovil Town Football Club grounds in Huish Park.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five male and female finishers.

An award will also be given to the person who runs the fastest up Hendford Hill in the King of the Hill race.

The deadline for entries for the medal design competition is Saturday, January 26.

Entries can be sent electronically to info@totalbuzzevents.com or posted to Total Buzz Events, Long Acre, Crouds Lane, Long Sutton Somerset, TA10 9NR.

Alternatively they can be posted on the Total Buzz Events Facebook page.
