As ever the West’s most serious art award, the Turnip Prize, broke new ground when the 2012 award was announced on Monday night.

An entry described by one onlooker as “a lazy attempt to invoke the spirit of Tracey Emin’s unmade bed” took the top trophy.

The entry, entitled The Three Tenas, was a pack of women’s Tenas sanitary towels, three of which were sticking out of the packet.

The spoof art award, held annually at the New Inn, Wedmore, was invented 14 years ago to cock a snook at the Turner Prize. The rules insist that competitors must make as little effort as possible. Despite those demands they do always come up with some gloriously punning titles.

Organiser Trevor Prideaux said they were “delighted with the lack of effort taken to create the work, and after the amount of rain we have had this year, the Tenas would come in very handy”.

“Miss Quick”, who created The Three Tenas, said: “I am amazed to win this most coveted art award on my third attempt, you can only imagine how the idea came to me.”

She told reporters: “I truly feel that the lack of effort has really paid off. I aimed low and luckily reached rock bottom which is more than I could have ever dreamed of. I am amazed at what my mediocrity and indifference has achieved”.

Mr Prideaux said: “This year’s event attracted a total of 86 entries, which is 17 more than last year. It’s fantastic that Miss Quick has won, she clearly has what it takes to be recognised in modern art circles and will be remembered in art history for no time at all.”
