A community bus service has been boosted by a donation from a major retailer.

The £2,000 from the Co-operative's Community Fund has helped Wellow Community Bus to continue running its services in and around the village.

The fund is made up of money from members of the Co-operative Group who choose to donate all, or part, of their twice-yearly dividend payments directly to the scheme.

The funds are then shared with community projects and groups across the country.

The bus service runs between Wellow and Bath, mostly to the Odd Down park and ride site but also taking in the city centre at times.

Bus scheme spokeswoman Prakriti Karthauser said: "We are very grateful for this donation from the Co-operative as many local people rely on our service in order to get out and do simple tasks like shopping. We are confident that the benefit of this extra support will be widespread in the community."

Sue Green, the firm's co-operative and membership officer in the Bath area, added: "Because our members own the business, they get a share in any of the profits we make.

"It's a scheme we're very proud of, not only because it gives us the chance to thank members for shopping with us, but because so many people choose to give something back to local communities."

Co-operative members receive a payment twice a year based on the points they earn when they trade at any of the group's businesses, including food, travel, pharmacy and Funeralcare, as well as the Co-operative Bank, Smile and the Co-operative Insurance.

"There is around £600,000 available in this region, each year, from the Community Fund, and we welcome applications from local groups and projects for £100 to £2,000," said Ms Green.

Application forms are available from www.co-operative. coop/communityfund or by calling 0844 262 4001.
