A 17-year-old man from Weston-super-Mare was arrested on Saturday and has been in custody since then.
He was charged with murder last night and will appear at North Somerset Magistrates Court today.
Detective Superintendent Mark Saunders, who is part of the investigation team, said: "This was an unprovoked assault which was witnessed by a significant number of people.
"At the moment there are a number of rumours circulating and I ask people not to listen to these.
"Our investigation is piecing together what happened but what we really need is to speak to any further witnesses.
"We have already spoken to a number of people as part of our investigation but we know there are others who have not yet come forward.
"To these people I say this: please call us and tell us what you know. We know it might not be easy but we will treat the information you give us with sensitivity and it could help as we continue our enquiries."
Anyone with information should contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101. Alternatively, phone the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. They never ask your name or trace your call.
