The main contractor working on the rebuilding of Weston-super-Mare's £51 million Grand Pier is reported to be paying £10,000 a day in penalty clause charges for failing to finish the project on time.

John Sisk and Son was due to hand the keys to the seafront landmark to owners Kerry and Michelle Michael on June 25.

But it did not happen because work is incomplete and the pier is now unlikely to open to the public until sometime in August.

Mr Michael said in a radio interview this week that Sisk was paying £10,000 for every day past the deadline.
