A new £10-million pound specialist college – which could open as early as September 2014 – could be built in Weston-super-Mare.

The new specialist college, being pioneered by Weston College and which will be open to students aged 14 to 19 years old, could be built on land at Locking Parklands.

The college, provisionally called the ‘North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College’ will have a focus on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) combined with a strong business ethos.

North Somerset Council, local businesses and universities have already pledged support for the college, which would be funded by the Department of Education.

Final costs for the new college have yet to be determined as the project is still in the bid stage.

Innovative ideas for the new college include the introduction of an 8.30am to 5pm ‘working day’ for all learners, including time for homework and enrichment activities, the wearing of ‘business dress’ instead of college uniform and specialised academic, vocational and technical training.

The college would be able to cater for up to 800 students with the capacity to extend should it need to.

University staff will provide top-level teaching for high fliers while employers will offer practical training and apprenticeships.

The collage is now surveying prospective parents and have launched a questionnaire which will help shape the future development of the new college.

The survey can be accessed at www.nsetc.co.uk. For more information call 01934 411407.
